Despite fog, San Francisco makes you want to be outside

San Francisco may not have the most ideal climate for year-round outdoor activities, but it comes pretty close. That is one of the reasons Forbes magazine has named it the best city in the US for communing with the great outdoors. Even though the sun shines in the foggy City by the Bay only 66 percent of the year, which is far less than in desert cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas, statistics indicate the temperature doesn't reach freezing the enitre year. And, on average, the mercury climbs to 90 degrees F. or higher just once a year. Beyond the weather, though, Forbes' editors considered such criteria as air quality, spending per resident on public parks, park acreage as a percentage of city land, and recreation facilities. The best cites for the outdoors, as ranked by Forbes:

San Francisco
San Diego
San Jose, Calif.
Jacksonville, Fla.
Phoenix
Tampa, Fla.
Minneapolis
Austin, Texas
Las Vegas
Virginia Beach, Va.
